Silver of the stars
Vistage member Michael Laing owner of Laing the Jeweller is also Chairman of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths and through them developed the Silver of the Stars project. Michael has this to say about the project
“Although our goal is to promote design and craft skills of our artist-silversmiths, I realised we could attract much wider audience through association with celebrity.
By jointly promoting creative talents in film, music, fashion and theatre with celebrities such as Sir Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor, Alexander McQueen, Robbie Coltraine etc we have had over 600,000 people around the World visit our exhibitions. The collection has been covered by National TV channels, newspapers and magazine features in UK, USA, Russia, China, Japan and across Europe.
By asking each celebrity about who they would most like to have a drink with (living or dead), where in the world they would be for that special conversation and what they would be drinking, then getting them to create the drinking vessel in collaboration with the silversmiths, we discovered both a rare insight into the values of each celebrity and a spectacular collection of both silver and stories.
Silver of the Stars has been displayed in the greatest museums of the world including the V&A in London, the Hermitage State Museum of Russia, the World Art Museum of Beijing. Next year we commence a European Tour visiting Spain, France, Germany, Poland and Denmark. Eventually the collection will be sold to a museum in its entirety and the proceeds will benefit each charity nominated by each celebrity.
Most importantly of all, the successful museum will have a stunning Silver Collection for our children and grand-children which exhibits the impact our celebrities have made on the World at the start of the 21st century in film, music, fashion, theatre and literature and all told through the craftsmanship of our silversmiths. – Job Done !”
